MOTUS — FMCSA’s new USDOT Registration System — is rolling out in phases, and the transition affects two very different groups:

  • Motor Carriers/Registered Entities

Carriers vs. Supporting Companies: What’s the Difference?

Motor Carriers / Registered Entities are companies that hold a USDOT Number or Operating Authority. Examples include:

  • For‑hire carriers
  • Private carriers
  • Brokers
  • Freight forwarders
  • Cargo tank facilities

Supporting Companies are organizations without a DOT Number that but still access the registration website, i.e. Insurance companies, Permitting companies, etc. 

What Is MOTUS?

MOTUS is FMCSA’s modernized registration platform designed to replace outdated systems and consolidate registration actions into one secure dashboard.

Registration enhancements include:

  • Stronger identity verification
  • Business verification and address validation
  • Consolidated workflows
  • Real‑time data checks
  • A unified dashboard for carriers and support partners

2026 — What Carriers must do:

  • Create MOTUS user accounts
  • Complete identity verification
  • Claim their USDOT Number
  • Manage registration actions inside MOTUS

Be sure:

  • Your access to the FMCSA Portal is active so that MOTUS can link your account
  • Verify Your Company Official
    • Must be Owner or Employee.
    • No Consultants or Third Party provider
  • Update your MCS-150
  • Verify business address, phone, and email address
  • Confirm fleet size and operational details
