National Work Zone Awareness Week 2026: Safe Actions Save Lives

National Work Zone Awareness Week 2026

Each spring, as construction season ramps up nationwide, transportation and safety partners shine a spotlight on one of the most dangerous environments on America’s roadways: work zones. National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) returns April 20–24, 2026, with a powerful reminder that every decision behind the wheel can mean the difference between life and death. This year’s theme— “Safe Actions Save Lives”—underscores the shared responsibility drivers and workers have in keeping each other safe.

This year’s campaign features a full week of national events designed to elevate awareness, encourage safer driving behaviors, and honor those whose lives have been lost in work zones.

Why Work Zone Awareness Matters

Work zones are some of the most hazardous places on the highway—for workers and motorists alike. In 2023, 899 people were killed in work zone crashes nationwide, with the majority being drivers or passengers rather than workers.

These numbers underscore the core message of NWZAW: Slow Down, Stay Alert, and Respect the Zone. Whether it’s shifting traffic patterns, reduced lanes, workers on foot, or unfamiliar nighttime conditions, work zones demand heightened awareness to prevent tragedies.

Key Events During NWZAW 2026

Throughout the week, states, fleets, safety teams, and the public are encouraged to participate in daily activities that promote awareness:

  • Monday, April 20 – Work Zone Safety Training Day
A day dedicated to refresher training for crews and safety staff.
  • Tuesday, April 21 – National Kickoff Event
Hosted by CTDOT in Farmington, CT.
  • Wednesday, April 22 – Go Orange Day
Wear orange to show support for work zone safety.
  • Thursday, April 23 – Social Media Storm
Organizations nationwide push coordinated messaging across digital platforms to amplify awareness.
  • Friday, April 24 – Moment of Silence
A solemn pause to honor workers and motorists who lost their lives in work zones.

These events offer simple but powerful ways for fleets and safety leaders to reinforce the message internally with drivers, dispatchers, and field staff.

What Fleets, Safety Managers & Drivers Can Do

Work zones are unpredictable, but risks can be dramatically reduced through disciplined, professional driving. During NWZAW—and all year—here are essential practices fleets should reinforce:

For Drivers

  • Slow down early and maintain space. Sudden merges and lane shifts are common; keeping distance gives room to react.
  • Stay alert for workers and equipment. Workers may be close to active traffic lanes or operating machinery.
  • Follow all posted signs and flagger instructions. Temporary traffic control devices are there to protect everyone.
  • Avoid distractions. Phones, infotainment screens, and even “quick glances” can turn dangerous in tight work zones.

For Safety Managers & Fleet Leaders

  • Refresh training and policies specific to work zone driving.
  • Use telematics and in-cab video to identify unsafe behaviors like speeding or inattention in work zones.
  • Coordinate dispatch timing so drivers aren’t pressured to rush through restricted areas.
  • Share NWZAW resources including posters, statistics, safety guides, and social assets available through FHWA, ATSSA, and the Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse.

A Shared Commitment to Safer Work Zones

National Work Zone Awareness Week reminds us that work zones are temporary workplaces, but the consequences of unsafe driving can be permanent. Whether you’re behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle or managing a fleet of professional drivers, safe actions truly do save lives. DOT resources available for NWZAW
