From Parking to Pay: ATRI Unveils Trucking’s Top Concerns

The trucking industry stands at a critical crossroads, as highlighted in the American Transportation Research Institute‘s (ATRI) 20th annual Top Industry Issues report, unveiled at the ATA Management Conference and Exhibition on October 12th. This year’s results, presented during a dynamic panel discussion led by ATRI President Rebecca Brewster, offered deep insights into the pressing challenges facing the trucking sector. The panel included perspectives from industry leaders such as Gregg Troian (PGT Trucking), Adam Kahn (Netradyne), and Walmart Transportation’s professional driver and America’s Road Team Captain, Antoine Sadler.

Here’s a closer look at the top concerns shaping the future of trucking:

1. The Economy

For the second consecutive year, the state of the economy secured its position as the industry’s #1 concern. Fluctuating demand, rising operational costs, and ongoing uncertainties around inflation have kept this issue at the forefront for motor carriers and drivers alike.

2. Truck Parking

The perennial problem of limited truck parking remained the second most pressing issue. For truck drivers, the lack of safe and accessible parking is more than an inconvenience; it’s a safety and productivity concern.

3. Lawsuit Abuse Reform

The growing impact of nuclear verdicts – massive legal settlements that can cripple trucking companies – pushed lawsuit abuse reform to the third spot this year. Addressing this issue will require legislative action to create a more balanced legal environment.

4. Insurance Cost and Availability

One of the most striking shifts in this year’s report is the dramatic rise of insurance cost and availability to the #4 spot, jumping eight positions. Rising premiums are placing significant financial strain on trucking companies, particularly small and mid-sized operations.

5. Driver Compensation

Attracting and retaining drivers continues to be a challenge, with driver compensation rounding out the top five. Fair and competitive pay remains a critical focus for improving workforce stability and satisfaction.

Rising Concerns: Battery Electric Vehicles

The push toward a more sustainable trucking industry propelled battery electric vehicles (BEVs) to the 6th spot, up four positions from last year. While the transition to BEVs aligns with long-term environmental goals, the significant costs and aggressive implementation timelines are causing concern among industry stakeholders.

Divergent Perspectives: Drivers vs. Motor Carriers

The report also highlights differing priorities between motor carriers and drivers.

  • Drivers’ Top Concerns:
    1. Truck Parking
    2. Driver Compensation
    3. The Economy
  • Motor Carriers’ Top Concerns:
    1. The Economy
    2. Lawsuit Abuse Reform
    3. Driver Shortage

Driving the Industry Forward

The ATRI survey, which gathered input from over 4,000 respondents including drivers, motor carrier personnel, and enforcement officials, offers a roadmap for addressing these challenges. Solving these issues will require collaboration among policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to ensure the trucking industry remains resilient and sustainable.
